In the March 30, 1959 issue of Time, the magazine ran an article on the dominance of the Western in prime time television. At that time eight of the top ten television shows were westerns: Gunsmoke; Wagon Train; Have Gun, Will Travel; The Rifleman; Maverick; Wyatt Earp; Zane Grey Theater; and Wanted, Dead or Alive. From what I can recall, we haven’t had a Western on television since Deadwood went off the air in 2006. Read more in the Time archive here.
